Located between the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains in the United States, the Roanoke Cement Company operates in an area of natural beauty. TITAN acquired the company in the early 1990s and has followed a strategy for sustainable growth ever since.
The industrial site has an open-to-all approach, with strong ties to the local community. The company’s support for and engagement with local agriculture is illustrated by its eff orts to drive energy efficiency, reduce emissions, improve the quality and quantity of water for farmers and invest in biodiversity to preserve the natural landscape. A mitigation plan to rehabilitate a long-abandoned limestone quarry into a 24,000m2 lake was fully supported by local stakeholders, as they felt their community would benefi t from the restoration. Sharing the value created, the lake is now enjoyed by employees and their children, and is used for education and training.
In recognition of Roanoke’s enduring commitment to environmental excellence, youth support and inclusive stakeholder engagement, Roanoke received the Portland Cement Association’s Outreach Award in 2018, and won the Environmental Performance category in 2019. The plant has also been ENERGY STAR® certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency for its energy performance for the last 12 years.
